MASLD Lifestyle Support: An App, a Coach, and Written Advice Perform Similarly: Hepatology International | October 2026
What Did the Study Find?
A single-centre trial randomized 297 people with MASLD to minimal intervention comprising usual care and written advice (102), structured lifestyle coaching (97), or mobile-health guidance (98). After 12 months, the controlled attenuation parameter—a non-invasive measure of liver fat—fell by approximately 24, 24, and 22 dB/m, respectively, with no between-group difference (P=0.998). None of the approaches significantly changed liver stiffness. App use throughout follow-up was about 53% in the mobile-health arm; the study relied on non-invasive measures rather than biopsy or MRI-based liver-fat assessment. Springer Nature Link
Why Does It Matter?
This is a comparison of ways to deliver lifestyle support, not proof that an app reverses steatohepatitis or fibrosis. The neutral result suggests clinics may offer accessible formats according to patient preference and capacity, while monitoring engagement and metabolic risk. Participants were mainly lower-risk patients, so the findings should not be extended to biopsy-proven MASH or significant fibrosis.
GastroAGI takeaway: For lower-risk MASLD, practical access and sustained engagement may guide the choice of lifestyle-support format; none of these approaches demonstrated fibrosis improvement.
