Introduction:

Diet plays an important role in the development of Crohn's disease (CD), but the effects of specific dietary fiber subtypes remain unclear. This prospective study evaluated whether individual fiber types influence the risk of developing Crohn's disease in first-degree relatives of affected patients.

  • No significant protective association was observed for fructooligosaccharides, pectin, or arabinoxylan, suggesting that not all dietary fibers provide the same biological benefit.

Clinical Impact:

This study highlights the importance of fiber quality rather than total fiber intake in Crohn's disease prevention. Although routine dietary recommendations cannot yet be made, beta-glucan and inulin appear to be promising nutritional strategies for individuals at high genetic risk and warrant evaluation in future interventional trials.

Bottom Line:

Not all dietary fibers are equal. Beta-glucan and inulin may strengthen the intestinal barrier, improve the gut microbiome, and reduce the future risk of Crohn's disease, offering a promising avenue for preventive nutrition in high-risk individuals.
